HOUSTON - After helping lead the University of Houston baseball team to a series sweep of league rival Memphis last weekend, senior righthander Matt Varner was honored Monday as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week.
A native of West Columbia, Texas, Varner struck out a UH season- and career-best 10 batters to improve to 6-3 this season. After allowing a first-inning run to the Tigers without getting an out, he proceeded to hold Memphis scoreless over the next seven innings.
He struck out at least one batter in six of the seven innings, with a pair of strikeouts in the same frame three times while walking just three batters.
This season, Varner leads the Cougars with six wins and a 4.07 ERA in 73.0 innings pitched.
Varner joined senior righthander Brett Cooley as the only Cougar hurlers to collect the league's weekly accolade in 2004.
UAB's Daniel Hill was recognized as the C-USA Hitter of the Week.
Varner and his Cougar teammates return to action at 7 p.m., Wednesday, when they meet No. 4 Rice in the finale of the 2004 Silver Glove Series at Reckling Park.
