Cougars lose game two after late inning surge by DePaul

CHICAGO - Houston continued its solid offensive play Saturday afternoon in game two of a double header with DePaul, but the Blue Demons used a five-run fourth inning and a fifth inning home run to escape with a 6-5 win over the Cougars. Houston dropped to 25-15 and 4-4 in Conference USA play with the loss while DePaul improved to 11-15 and 6-2 in C-USA play.

Houston grabbed a first inning lead for the second consecutive game with DePaul by taking advantage of a defensive mishap by the Blue Demons. Kristen Glowacz ripped a two out single to center field and advanced to third base after an error on the center fielder, she was knocked in to give Houston a 1-0 lead by Jenilee Skender who singled to center field, giving the Cougars a 1-0 cushion.

After picking up another run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead, Houston added three more runs in the fourth inning on three hits to grab a 5-0 lead. Lindsay Durham doubled, forcing Jaci Gonzalez to third base and both players scored on a Kim Nesloney single. Nesloney reached home on a Jamie Adams single, giving Houston a 5-0 lead.

The fourth inning proved to be big for the Blue Demons as well, as they tied the game at 5-5 with six hits. The inning started off with a bang for DePaul as Saskia Roberson blasted a two-run home run to right center field to get the Blue Demons on the board.

Roberson provided the big hit of the game in the fifth inning, leading off with another blast to right center field to give DePaul a 6-5 lead which they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.

Leslie Scott picked up the win for the Blue Demons, pitching three innings of shut out ball while giving up just two hits. Crystal Briscoe took the loss for Houston, falling to 6-7 on the year.

The Cougars and the Blue Demons will close out the series Sunday afternoon at noon.
