Houston Wins Seven Events At LSU Alumni Gold Meet

Baton Rouge, La.- - The University of Houston track and field teams won seven events at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational Meet on Saturday, April 17, at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
Krystal Ward returned to the form she displayed two years ago when she won the heptathlon with 5,329 points. It was eight points shy of her career best when she earned All-American honors at the 2002 NCAA Championships. Ward sat out the 2003 outdoor season with a stress fracture in her foot. All-American and Conference USA Indoor Athlete-of-the-Year Stanford Routt won the men's 200 meters in his 2004 Outdoor season debut with a wind-aided time of 20.38 seconds. LaDedra Guy posted her first collegiate victory in the women's 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 11.63 seconds and had a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a legal time of 23.59 seconds. Lisa Wilson also finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.86 seconds.
Sesar Figueroa won the men's 1500 meters with a career-best time of 3:51.83 and posted a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.07. Alex Winstel finished in fourth-place in the 1500-meter race with a time of 3:57.44.
Andrew Carruthers won the men's 110-meter hurdles race with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 14.05 seconds and was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.20 seconds. Milton Manson also had a NCAA qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdle with the third-fastest time in the race with 14.14 seconds.
Alicia Cave was the runner-up in the women's 400-meter race with a time of 58.43 seconds after finishing in fifth place with a wind-aided time of 13.45 seconds in the women's 100-meter dash.
Cave also ran on Houston's winning 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. The Lady Cougars won the 4x100-meter race in a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 45.23 seconds and also qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships with a time of 3:40.66.
Tristian Whitley set a UH freshman record in the men's high jump when he finished in second place after clearing 2.20 meters (7-2.50). Cedric Norman of Southern Miss won the event with an equal height, but had fewer misses than Whitley to win the event.
Houston's tandem of Carruthers, Carey LaCour, Michael Francis and Routt was the runner-up in the men's 4x400-meter relay race with a time of 3:10.17.
Jonathan Reeves was the runner-up in the men's shot put with a mark of 17.59 meters (57-8.50) and posted a seventh-place finish in the men's discus with a throw of 47.52 meters (155-11). Derek Randall was the third-place finisher in the discus with a throw of 51.32 meters (168-4).
Houston will return to action at two different competitions next week when the Cougars compete in the Penn Relays Carnival and the Rice Outdoor Twilight meet on April 24.
