BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Houston baseball team begins its first road trip of the season when it faces No. 1 LSU at 6:30 p.m., Friday at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
Friday's game begins a three-game, non-conference series with the Tigers. The series continues at 2 p.m., Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday. Fans can hear all three games live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.uhcougars.com.
The Cougars (4-7) come into the series on the heels of an impressive 10-4 win over No. 25 Baylor on Tuesday at Cougar Field. In that game, junior shortstop Stuart Musslewhite and freshman center fielder Jake Stewart each went 2-for-5 with three RBIs to help lead the Cougars to their first winning streak of the season.
Junior righthander Garrett Mock is expected to start the series opener against the Tigers. This season, Mock has thrown to an 0-3 record with five strikeouts and a 7.90 ERA in 13.2 innings of work.
Junior infielder Cole Bruce leads the Cougars with a .333 batting, while Musslewhite jumped into the team lead with 12 RBIs following Tuesday's contest.
This marks the fifth consecutive season that the Cougars will meet LSU on the baseball diamond. UH owns an 18-13 advantage in the all-time series, which began in 1975 and has been played at least twice every year since 2000.
As hostile as Alex Box Stadium can be in college baseball, the Cougars have enjoyed some success in Baton Rouge, posting an 8-8 all-time record there.
A year ago, the two teams split a two-game series, which was shortened when the opener was canceled due to wet weather.
The Tigers (10-1) come into the series after taking a 6-0 win over No. 8 Tulane on Tuesday at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La, a win that extended their winning streak to eight games.
Junior outfielder J.C. Holt leads the Tigers with a .438 batting average, while junior outfielder Ryan Patterson is tops with 13 RBIs. Patterson, Jon Zeringue, Matt Liuzza and Nick Stavinoha lead LSU with two home runs apiece.
Sophomore righthander Justin Meier (2-0, 1.80) is expected to start on the mound for the Tigers.
