Houston softball drops game two to Southern Miss

HOUSTON - After jumping out to a 1-0 lead over Southern Miss in game two of a double header with Southern Miss Saturday afternoon the University of Houston softball team fell victim to another Golden eagle offensive outburst, falling 7-1. The loss drops the Cougars to 24-13 on the year and 3-2 in Conference USA play.
The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when senior Lindsay ripped a two out double to left field for Houston first hit of the game. After Kim Nesloney walked, Brandi Clark pinch hit for Jenny Baker and knocked in Durham with a single, putting the Cougars up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles answered back in the top of the fourth inning with six runs as Houston's ace pitcher Jenny Johnson struggled on the mound. After walking Auriel Jenkins and giving up a single to Ashley Davis to start the inning, Southern Miss used aggressive base running to put runners in scoring position with a double steal.
A walk to Charity Butler loaded the bases with one out and a fielders choice for Heather Bell tied the game at 1-1. Ashley Brenan then doubled to give Southern Miss a 3-1 lead, the next batter Jessica Huerta capped off the inning for the Golden Eagles with a three-run home run.
Johnson took the loss for Houston, giving up seven runs on seven hits in four innings. Freshman Carla Kennimer pitched in relief of Johnson going two innings while not giving up a run.
Houston, who had dropped five of their last six games, will close out the season series with Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Complex.
