WACO, Texas - For the first time since late last month, the University of Houston was shut out, as the Cougars were blanked by Baylor, 2-0, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Getterman Stadium. The last time the Cougars were shut out was back on February 26, when BYU blanked UH, 2-0.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 23-9, while Baylor improves to 23-6.
The Cougars mounted an early threat to start the game. Kim Nesloney left off the game with a double into the right-center gap. Nesloney moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Adams, but she was left stranded as Kristen Glowacz struck out and Jenilee Skender grounded out sharply to shortstop to end the inning.
Baylor took the lead in the fourth inning, when Kelly Osburn ripped a triple off the right-field wall. The ball bounced off the wall and past UH's Lindsay Durham, allowing Osburn to reach third standing up. The next batter, April Luce, singled through the right side of the infield to bring home Osburn, giving Baylor a 1-0 lead.
After Crystal Briscoe (6-3) struck out Melissa Maler, Carrie Leerberg sacrificed Luce to second with two outs. Kim Wilmoth came up with the crucial two-out knock, plating Luce with a single to right field. On the play Wilmoth was thrown out trying to advance to second.
The Cougars managed only three hits off Baylor pitching, with all three coming against Bear starter Cristen Vitek (14-3). Lisa Ferguson relieved Vitek in the fifth and held the Cougars hitless to notch her sixth save of the season.
