University of Houston track and field head coach Leroy Burrell has been named the South Central Region Men's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, as voted on by his peers, after leading the Houston Cougars to the 2004 Conference USA indoor title for the second consecutive year and fifth overall since 1997.
This is the second such honor for Burrell, as he was named the Men's Indoor South Central Regional Coach of the Year in 2003 after leading both his men's and women's squads to the 2003 C-USA Indoor Championship. This year, the Cougar men's team set a new conference record with 181 total points to claim the 2004 indoor league title, and Burrell was named 2004 C-USA Indoor Coach of the Year.
During his six years at the helm of the Cougar track and field program, Burrell has coached his men's and women's teams to a combined nine different conference championships titles, and been named either the men's or women's C-USA Coach of the Year a total of six times, including indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
The annual award has been given since the NCAA Division I Coaches Association was formed more than 50 years ago. It is awarded to the top coaches and athletes in each NCAA division by the United States Track Coaches Association. The awards are sponsored by Mondo Athletic, which is the number one track surfacing company in the world.
National men's and women's Coaches of the Year will be named after the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, set for March 12-13.
