Cougar Rally This Time Sends Them Into Championship Game

AUSTIN, Texas - For the second straight game the Cougar softball team found itself trailing heading into its final at bat, but this time a two-run sixth propelled Houston past Sam Houston State, 3-2, and into the championship game of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational.

With the win the Cougars improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Bearkats fell to 1-3. The Cougars are now 5-1 lifetime against Sam Houston State.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the "Cardiac Cougars" struck again. Junior Jeanie Davis reached on an error by Sam Houston's Lauren Boone, and true freshman Jamie Adams pinch ran for Davis. Junior Michelle Keith, who earlier had given the Cougars a 1-0 lead on her first home run of the season, sacrificed Adams into scoring position.

After another out sophomore Jaci Gonzalez ripped a double off the left-center wall to score Adams. The two-bagger was the first hit of the young season for Gonzalez. Gonzalez scored the eventual winning run on a single to left field by Brandi Clark.

Senior pitcher Jenny Johnson continued her early season dominance by working the final two-and-a-third innings in relief of senior starter Jamie Falco. In four games so far this season---all out of the bullpen---Johnson has pitched 12 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run. Falco was cruising along until the top of the fifth when the Bearkats took the lead. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Falco walked SHSU's Erin Lindsey and then was greeted with a double to right field by Chrissy Dileo. Sara Gatlin plated both runs with a two-run double of her own, which spelled the end of Falco's evening.

Johnson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh by coaxing a ground ball to second base.

The Cougars will face the winner of the Texas-UTA game which was played later in the evening.
