HOUSTON - After a stellar offensive weekend, University of Houston senior DH Brett Cooley was honored Monday as the first Conference USA Hitter of the Week of the 2004 season.
Cooley hit safely, recorded at least one run, blasted at least one double, posted at least one RBI and drew at least one walk in all three games at the Classic. He capped the Cougars' stay at the tournament by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a run and RBI against No. 4 Texas on Sunday evening.
For the season, he is batting a team-best .500 (7-for-14) with three runs, four doubles and four RBIs to go along with a .786 slugging percentage and .588 on-base percentage.
That honor joined his berth on the 2004 Minute Maid Park College Classic All-Tournament Team. It was the second consecutive year that he was named to that squad.
Cooley and his Cougar teammates return to action at 4 p.m., Tuesday, when they meet No. 1 Rice in Game One of the Silver Glove Series at Reckling Park. Fans can hear that game on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com.
East Carolina pitcher Greg Bunn was honored as the C-USA Pitcher of the Week.
