Houston, Texas - In a three-day tournament that seemed like it was a week long due to numerous rain delays, the University of Houston softball team finished the Hilton Plaza Cougar Invitational today by defeating Louisiana-Monroe, 2-1 in nine innings before falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3, in 11 innings.
The Cougars stand at 6-3 on the season and will faced Texas A&M in a doubleheader on February 18, in College Station.
Against UL Monroe the Cougars pushed across a run in the their half of the ninth inning, and senior Jenny Johnson closed the door on the Indians in the bottom half of the frame to seal the Houston victory. With international rules in effect, freshman Jamie Adams was sacrificed to third by senior Candis Turnbo, and after a two-out walk to junior Kim Nesloney, Adams scored on a wild pitch to give UH the lead.
When the Indians looked as though they were going to score the potential tying run with runners at second and third, junior Jenilee Skender caught the Indians napping and picked off the runner at third. Johnson then nailed down the next two outs to notch her second win of the season.
In the nightcap the Cougars looked to be on cruise control behind senior pitcher Jamie Falco, who breezed through the A&M-Corpus Christi lineup with a two-run lead until the bottom of the sixth inning. Brenda Guerrero doubled to start the inning and then the next batter, Megan Hansen, tied the game with one swing by launching a two-run shot to left center.
Both the Cougars and Islanders had their chances in extra innings, but there was zeros on the scoreboard until the 11th. With sophomore Brandi Clark on second base, Skender laid down a sacrifice bunt that TAMUCC pitcher Sarah Pauley threw wildly past first, allowing Clark to score and Skender to reach second. With senior Jenny Baker pinch running for Skender, junior Kristen Glowacz ripped a single up the middle with one out; however, Baker was thrown out at the plate to halt the UH rally.
In the bottom of the inning A&M-Corpus Christi?s Jennifer Golden hit the first pitch from Johnson over the left-field wall for a game-winning, walk-off home run.
