Cougars take two at Hilton Plaza Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team finally took the field at the Hilton Plaza Cougar Invitational Saturday night, picking up a couple of wins. The Cougars used a two-run third inning against Baylor to take a 2-1 lead which they held onto for the win, and in their second game of the night against Northern Iowa Houston used the long ball to jump on top of Northern Iowa to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Jamie Falco picked up her second win of the year with the victory over Baylor while Jenny Johnson picked up her second save of the year after shutting down the Bears in a bases loaded situation in the fifth inning.
The Cougars picked up their runs in the third inning when Lindsay Durham scored on a Baylor error and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Kristen Glowacz, which plated Jaci Gonzalez.
In the night cap, which lasted in to the early morning hours of Sunday, the Cougars used home runs from Gonzalez and Brandi Clark to earn a 3-0 decision over the Panthers. Crystal Briscoe pitched a complete game one-hitter to improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Cougars will be in action again Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on Louisiana-Monroe. Tournament action picks up at 9 a.m. when Northern Iowa takes on A&M-Corpus Christi.
