HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team announced the signing of four high school seniors and a junior college transfer on Monday, during the early signing period for next year's Fall 2005 squad.
The group includes four Texans, from Shiner, Brenham and Houston, as well as the program's first recruit from California.
"We had some big offensive shoes to fill with this class," said head coach Kyla Holas. "The signees will be a good mixture of power and speed. We look to improve each year and feel that we have done it again. This also sees us signing our first California player. That is a big step we were ready to make as a program."
The LaPalma, Calif., signee is catcher Elaina Nordstrom, who come from Kennedy High School.
Also joining the team is a set of twins, Haley and Jessica Valis, out of St. Paul High School in Shiner, Texas. Haley was recruited as a third baseman and catcher, while sister Jessica will play shortstop.
The other two Texans to sign with the Cougars are Candi Kloecker, a native of Brenham, and Laurie Wagner, out of Houston.
Kloeckner is a transfer athlete who is coming from Blinn Community College as a first baseman and pitcher. Wagner, who prepped at Stratford High School, was recruited as an infielder and designated player.
