HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team began its preparations for this weekend's Homecoming contest against Conference USA rival East Carolina with a solid workout Tuesday afternoon.
Although cooler, wet weather was in the forecast throughout the day, head coach Art Briles took advantage of UH's impressive athletic facilities and moved the practice into the Yeoman Fieldhouse.
The Cougars host their 59th Homecoming contest this weekend as they face the Pirates at 4 p.m., Saturday at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. UH will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak in those games with the team's last win coming against Cincinnati during the 1999 campaign.
This will be the second time in the last three seasons that the Cougars have faced East Carolina during Homecoming. In 2002, the Pirates walked away with a 54-48 win in triple overtime.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on Star 790, KBME-AM with the pregame show beginning 45 minutes prior to kickoff. Tom Franklin and Tony Fitzpatrick will call all the action from the booth with Chuck Brown serving as the sideline reporter.
All Cougar Football games can be heard live on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com.
After enduring six of their first seven games away from Robertson Stadium, the Cougars close out their regular season with home contests in three of their last four games. Playing in front of the hometown fans was a big factor in the Cougars' 24-3 win over C-USA rival Tulane last weekend and will continue to be so for the remainder of the season.
"It really helped being at home," second-year head coach Art Briles said at his regular Tuesday press luncheon. "It's just a comforting factor. Of course, you have to win on the road, but you have to have your home games, too. We need to take advantage of three of our last four games being here at home and see how we finish this thing up."
