IRVING, Texas - Conference officials named junior Kami Miller of the University of Houston tennis team the Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Month on Wednesday.
The award is the first conference honor of Miller's career who has been a consistent force on the Cougar team over the past two years.
"I am thrilled for her to finally get the attention and recognition that she deserves," said Houston head coach John Severance. "She has been a tremendous asset to the team with 19 wins last year and carrying a very high GPA."
Miller earned the conference citation after picking up her first 2004 tournament title at the San Diego Tournament where she stretched her winning streak to 12 straight victories and went 4-0 in singles play to claim the Single B-Flight Championship, defeating the University of San Diego's Lauren Kazarian 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.
Throughout the tournament, Miller refused to surrender a single set, soundly defeating each opponent with the closest set ending in a 6-4 decision.
The Glendale, Ariz. native also went 2-1 in doubles action with partner senior Diana Martin, who together defeated their first two opponents, USD's Tara Livesay and Brittany Reitz and SDSU's Sisse Nielsen and Carla Bell, 5-2 and 8-0, respectively.
The duo was knocked out in the semifinals of the tournament, falling to Dita Hauerlandova and Indra Erichsen of SDSU in an 8-5 loss.
