Houston, Texas- - Houston head football coach Art Briles finds himself in somewhat of a quandary as the Cougars prepared to play at the University of Southern Mississippi this Thursday night at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Cougars will face a very tough defense, yet with two days of practice, Houston will have very little time to prepare for Thursday night's game. "Southern Miss has an extremely talented and unorthodox defense," Briles said. "You try to prepare as much as you can, but with just two days to practice, you have to scale some things back."
The game also will be Southern Miss' first home game of the 2004 season after the Golden Eagles began the season with three straight wins on the road.
Houston does go into the game some what experienced at playing nationally-televised games on Thursday night after playing against fifth-ranked Miami in a nationally-televised game on September 23 at Reliant Stadium.
Briles is also pleased that some of his seniors have stepped up the last two days in practice.
"They have a sense of urgency because they don't have too much longer to play as collegiate football players," Briles said. "We also don't have a lot of time to get things turned around as a team."
The Cougars enter Thursday night's game with a 1-4 overall record and are 1-1 in C-USA games this season.
Following Thursday night's contest at Southern Miss, the Cougars have just five games left in the regular season.
