HOUSTON (AP) - Kevin Kolb threw for 267 yards and ran for a touchdown as Houston broke a four-game losing streak by shutting down Tulane 24-3 Saturday night.
Houston (2-6, 2-3 Conference USA) won for the first time since beating Army on Sept. 18.
The Cougars scored on a fumble recovery, and held Tulane (2-5, 1-4) to 250 yards and four third-down conversions. The defensive performance was surprising considering Houston opponents averaged 37 points the past four games and Tulane last week beat UAB 59-55.
Houston's Vincent Marshall caught seven passes for 110 yards for his fourth-straight 100-yard receiving game, and Donnie Avery added two catches for 80 yards.
Tulane's Lester Ricard went 17-of-35 for 149 yards and two interceptions.
Houston went up 7-0 on Ryan Gilbert's 1-yard TD run on the Cougars' opening drive, and on Tulane's next possession Wade Koehl sacked Ricard in the end zone and recovered his fumble for a score.
Kolb's 3-yard score made it 21-0 in the second quarter. UH led 24-0 at halftime.
