HOUSTON - The Houston volleyball team put on perhaps its best outing of the season in a 3-0 blowout over visiting UAB in the Athletics/Alumni Center on Friday night.
The Cougars refused to allow UAB to score more than 20 points in any of the games and claimed the match 30-12, 30-18 and 30-19. The Blazers' combined 49 points in the match is the lowest by any Houston opponent since rally scoring began in 2001. The Blazers coincidently held the previous low as well when they scored 53 in a 3-0 loss to Houston in 2001.
For the Cougars the win improves Houston to 4-5 in Conference USA and 6-16 overall, while UAB falls to 1-19 and 0-8 in conference.
Senior Loure Dews reached a personal milestone in the match when she and sophomore Becca Sartori blocked a UAB attack in Game 1. The block assist moved Dews into the No. 4 all-time block assists spot with 320 BA, as she went on to record four stops in the match (3 BA, 1 BS).
Dews was also the match leader in kills for the evening, as she hung 14 kills on the Blazers, followed by sophomores Becca Sartori and Kelly McAnelly who chipped in 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
McAnelly, who also had 12 digs, was one of two Cougars to record a double-double against UAB, the other was junior Jennifer Hohl with her 25 assists and 14 digs in the match.
Throughout the night the Cougars managed to out pace the Blazers in nearly every statistical category as they out did UAB in kills 51-20, assists 48-18, service aces 6-0, digs 62-40 and hitting percentage .254 to a -.042 UAB performance.
However, Houston was out blocked in the three-game match, 11-7 where UAB's Cassi Ociesa tallied six blocks against the Cougar attackers.
Game 1 represented another milestone in Cougar history since rally scoring was implemented. The 30-12 final marked the lowest points in a game for any Houston opponent, the previous being two 13-point outings by opponents.
After the Blazers pulled to within three at 18-15 in the second game, the Cougars managed to jump out on a 12-3 run to close out the match.
Looking at their second three-game sweep of the season, the Cougars allowed UAB only six kills in the game to close out the match 3-0.
Saturday evening the Cougars are back at it in the Athletics/Alumni Center on what will be "Digs For The Cure Night" against C-USA foe USF (6-13, 0-7) at 7:00 p.m. Donations will be taken at the match for those wanting to help the fight against breast cancer by donating to the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation.
