HOUSTON - Over the weekend the Cougar tennis team traveled to College Station, Texas for the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament, where the team faced some of the toughest teams in the country in Texas, Texas A&M as well as Tulane.
Senior Biljana Dimovska was the only Cougar to be placed in the main draw of the tournament without having to play in a qualifying match. The rest of the team needed to fight to get one of the eight open qualifying positions to participate in the main draw.
Houston managed to pick up not one, but two of the at-large positions as junior Kami Miller and freshman Sacha Gumbs won their qualifying matches to be entered into the main draw.
Playing in the first round of the main draw, Dimovska, Miller and Gumbs each lost tough matches, but the Cougars finished singles play with a 9-3 mark in the qualifying matches and 9-6 overall.
In doubles play, Houston posted a 4-3 mark as both the tandem of senior Diana Martin and Miller, and junior Yolandi Terblanche and freshman Tiffany McLoughlin advanced to the Sweet 16 of the tournament. The third duo of Dimovska and Gumbs, was defeated in the opening round.
Martin and Miller bowed out in the Round of 16 after a close match with the No. 4 seed from Baylor in Covello and Cerna, who won the match 8-6. Terblanche and McLoughlin also played well before falling 8-4 to LSU's Tucker and Chiarlli.
Next up for the Cougars is the UT-San Antonio Invitational where the Cougars will participate in a Mock Dual style tournament on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30.
