HOUSTON - The Houston softball team traveled to Spring Klein, Texas over the weekend where the Cougars participated in the Spring Klein College Classic, facing off against Sam Houston, Texas Tech, Blinn, Baylor and Nicholls State.
In the tournament Houston went 2-2-1, beginning with a 6-2 win over Sam Houston and a 3-0 victory over Texas Tech, before falling to Blinn 1-0, then to Baylor 2-1 and reaching a 3-3 tie with Nicholls State.
In the Cougars' 6-2 win over Sam Houston, Glowacz came up with two homeruns and senior Kim Nesloney added one of her own. Kennimer was tough on the mound once again, recording four strikeouts with six hits, and one earned run.
Against Texas Tech, Love one again got the start. This time she recorded the 3-0 shutout win with a complete game that included three strikeouts and four hits. Houston tallied eight hits in the game, including a homer by Keith, a 3-for-3 performance by Glowacz and a double and a single off the bat of senior Jeanie Davis.
Looking for some payback against Blinn who beat the Cougars last week, Briscoe again pitched a complete game, giving up five hits and no earned runs. But the Cougars weren't able to hold out for a win as Blinn scored the lone run in the game off a passed ball in the fifth inning.
Glowacz provided the lone score in the Cougars 1-2 loss to Baylor in the seventh game. Facing Nicholls State in the final game of the tournament for the Cougars, Glowacz hit her fourth homer of the tournament, but Houston still trailed 2-3 in the closing moments of the ball game. In the end, it was junior Brooke Johnson who stepped up to the plate and hit a solo shot that barely managed to stay fair to tie the game at 3-3 when time ran out.
Next up for the Cougars in their fall schedule is another tournament being hosted at home this Friday, Oct. 23, at the Cougar Softball Field.
