HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team continued workouts during its first bye week of the season with a solid practice Tuesday at the UH Athletics Complex.
The Cougars, who dropped a 35-29 decision in overtime at Southern Miss on Thursday, don't play again until 6 p.m., Oct. 23, when they meet C-USA rival TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Cougars' contest at TCU will be broadcast on Star 790, KBME-AM with the pregame show beginning 45 minutes prior to kickoff. Tom Franklin and Tony Fitzpatrick will call all the action from the booth with Chuck Brown serving as the sideline reporter.
All Cougar Football games can be heard live on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com.
With so much time to prepare for the Horned Frogs, the Cougars began their week with a two-hour workout Tuesday and followed that with a vigorous session in the weight room. Instead of installing the game plan for TCU, the Cougars will take care of other business this week before turning their attention to the Horned Frogs.
"We're taking care of our school work and taking care of ourselves," Briles said. "We're fine-tuning plays from an offensive standpoint that we feel we need help on. From the defensive side, we're keeping everyone on the same page, making sure we are right with our personnel and keeping the intensity alive."
After facing a schedule which featured two Top Four teams and only one game at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium to date, Briles said he was proud of his team's mental and physical toughness.
"We have been to the bottom of the hill. Now it is our turn to climb," Briles said. "I am very impressed with our players' attitude, effort and resiliency. They have overcome a lot in the previous six games."
The Cougars come into the week after a thrilling 35-29 loss in overtime at Conference USA rival Southern Miss on Thursday. While it was a tough defeat, Briles was quick to recognize how well his team played under difficult conditions against the defending C-USA champions.
"That was a heart-wrenching game. We played as well as we have played in the year-and-a-half that I have been here," Briles said. "For our players not to enjoy the benefits of that effort, attitude and hard work is a thing that hurts me as a coach. If they go to work, I want them to get paid.
