Houston Opens Indoor Track Season with Strong Showing

The University of Houston Track and Field team opened the 2004 indoor track season in hosting the Houston Indoor Opener on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon at the Yeoman Field House inside the Athletics/Alumni Center with the Cougar men and women placing among the top five in 16 events in the non-scoring meet.
Among the schools competing in the meet included Rice, Southern-Baton Rouge, Texas, Texas Southern, Sam Houston State, McNeese State, UT-San Antonio, Louisiana Tech, Prairie View A&M, UL-Lafayette and Huston-Tillotson.
Two Cougars scored NCAA-provisional marks - Alicia Cave placed third in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.37, the best mark by a UH women in the race since the 2002 season, and freshman Carey LaCour took the men's 200m dash with a final time of 21.34.
The Houston men's 4x400 relay team of Andrew Carruthers, Stanford Routt, Michael Francis and LaCour took second with a finishing time of 3:19.41.
The Cougars took first and second place in the men's shot put, with Johnathan Reeves taking first with a throw of 16.81m (55-0.2 ft.) and Lucas Mireles taking second with a throw of 16.75m (54-11.5 ft.). The Houston women swept the weight throw, with Shayla Bowman winning the event with a throw of 16.50m, followed by Allie Booker in second (15.75m) and Tinisha Wesley in third (14.51m). Booker also placed second in the shot with a throw of 13.52, and Wesley claimed fourth place (13.14m).
Cougar Caresir Hamilton had a strong day, tying teammate Krystal Ward for second in the women's high jump (1.73m) and also taking second in the long jump (5.68m).
The meet was the first of four indoor meets that Houston hosts this season. The Cougars host the Leonard Hilton Memorial on Friday, Jan. 23.
