HOUSTON - With Opening Day looming, the University of Houston baseball team will start the 2004 season in impressive fashion with its annual Preseason Dinner on February 7.
The banquet, which will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the UH Hilton (4800 Calhoun), begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception and cash bar. Dinner and the program is scheduled to start around 7:30 p.m.
Members of the 2004 Cougar Baseball Team and coaching staff will be recognized. In addition, former Cougar greats Jesse Crain and Erick Burke will be honored as the program's Professional Baseball Players of the Year.
Individual tickets are available for $45, and fans can sponsor a Cougar Baseball player for a similar cost. Various table reservations with seating for 10 people also are available. For more information, call the UH Baseball Office at 713-743-9396.
Business attire is requested. Seating is limited and reservations are guaranteed based on the order in which they are received, so fans should make plans for the banquet soon.
The Cougars open the 2004 season on Feb. 13-15 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic. At that round-robin tournament, UH will meet Kansas State at 11 a.m., Feb. 13 and Texas Tech at 3 p.m., Feb. 14. The Cougars then close out the three-day event with a 6 p.m., showdown on Feb. 15 against No. 5 Texas.
A year ago, the Cougars enjoyed another record-setting season. UH advanced to the NCAA Regional for the fifth consecutive season and the 16th time in school history.
Even more impressive, the Cougars competed in the NCAA Super Regional at Reckling Park and forced a deciding Game Three before falling short. It was the third time in the last four seasons that UH advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Super Regional and marked the second consecutive season that UH fell to the eventual national champion in the postseason.
