HOUSTON, Texas - Already a member of two national watch lists, University of Houston senior center Rex Hadnot (Lufkin, Texas) today was named to the Lombardi Award Watch List, as announced today by The Rotary Club of Houston. The prestigious award, which was won by the late Wilson Whitley in UH?s magical 1976 season, honors the nation's best interior lineman or linebacker.
Hadnot is already a member of the Rimington Award (nation's best center) and Outland Trophy (interior lineman) watch lists.
A three-year starter for the Cougars, Hadnot has entered his final season as one of the top offensive linemen in Conference USA. Hadnot has started 24 straight games at UH, dating back to the first game of the 2001 season. A former starter at left guard, Hadnot switched to center prior to the Memphis game in 2002. Hadnot was selected to the preseason All-Conference USA First Team, as picked by the league's head coaches and media.
Last season Hadnot picked up Second Team, All-Conference USA honors after setting team records for an offensive lineman with 160 pancake blocks, 196 knockdowns and 122 "ESPN" highlight plays, while grading out at 89 percent on the season. More impressively, Hadnot allowed only one sack all season, and that occurred in the first game of the year versus Rice. After the 48-14 win over Rice last Saturday night, Hadnot has gone more than a year without allowing a sack.
The Cougars have three players who are members of the prestigious watch lists, as junior kicker Dustin Bell is a two-time member of the Lou Groza Award list, and senior punter Jimmy McClary was named to the Ray Guy Award list last week.
