HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston junior linebacker Lance Everson (Richmond, Texas) today was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office in Chicago.
Making the first start of his UH career, Everson racked up career-best 17 total tackles, including 12 unassisted and one for a loss, in leading the Cougars to a 48-14 win over crosstown rival Rice in the annual Administaff Bayou Bucket battle at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Everson began the game as an outside linebacker but moved to the middle slot with the injury to Damien West. Everson and his teammates held the Owls to just 242 yards of total offense, including a mere 36 through the air. The Owls scored just one touchdown in the first half and added a late score in the fourth quarter.
TCU running back Ricky Madison and Tulane kick returner Fred Smith picked up the conference's other two weekly awards.
