HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston football team practiced for two hours Wednesday in preparation for their game with the Mississippi State Bulldogs Saturday at 7 p.m. at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars (2-1) had a strong practice as they get ready to take on Mississippi State who is 0-2 on the season after falling to Tulane 38-21 last Saturday.
Putting their 21-14 win over Louisiana Lafayette in wet, sloppy conditions behind them, the Cougars focused on preparations for the Bulldogs.
Head coach Art Briles said he was pleased with the effort his team gave in practice, but knows there is still work to be done for the Cougars before Saturday night.
"It was good work," Briles said. "Our tempo was a little better and that's what we're trying to get. We're trying to get as many things up to speed as we need to. We're not quite as sharp as we need to be execution wise, but we'll get there. It's just Wednesday."
With three games under their belts, the Cougars continue to grow into the offensive and defensive system Briles and his staff have implemented. Every week the team continues to learn and get better, which Briles said is to be expected.
"We're showing progress and improvement but we're still a long way from home. We have this game to help get us there and the closer to home we get, the more complete a football team we'll be."
Briles said it is nice to be back at home, playing in front of their own fans and on their own field.
We're excited about being back home playing in front of the home crowd," he said. "We'll get out there Saturday, hopefully execute on both sides of the ball and get a big win."
