Houston, Texas - It has been quite a change for the University of Houston football team this week.
"Last week, we were only able to practice one day outdoors because of the weather," Houston head coach Art Briles said. "This week, we have been able to practice two straight days outdoors on our practice fields."
The Cougars practiced in full pads for two-and-a-half hours on the UH practice fields Wednesday afternoon in preparation for Saturday night's game at Louisiana-Lafayette. While it may not seem like much difference, it is very important for Briles and his staff.
"We are limited in what we can do inside because there isn't enough room to work on all of our throws," Briles said.
The Cougars head into Saturday night looking for their first road win of the season after falling, 50-3, at fifth-ranked Michigan last Saturday.
"I know that they will be ready and a tough team to play after nearly beating South Carolina in their season-opener," Briles said. "But, we are walking in there needing a win on the road because we have some good Conference USA road games ahead of us.
After the Louisiana-Lafayette game, the Cougars return home and play Mississippi State at Robertson Stadium on September 20. Houston opens its Conference USA schedule at East Carolina on September 30 and at Tulane on October 11. The Cougars also have road games at Army and Louisville in November.
"Our goal is to fight for a Conference USA championship," Briles said. "Every game is an opportunity and we need to gain some momentum heading into league play. We've got two more non-conference games to get some and we need to go into each game with an attitude to achieve, a determination to win and a purpose to prove."
