HOUSTON, Texas - With temperatures reaching triple digits the University of Houston football team continued its quest for a Conference USA title, as the Cougars took part in a two-hour practice this afternoon on Day Two of the Art Briles' Era.
One day removed from his first fall practice, the first-year coach and former Cougar standout likes his team's progress but anticipates more efficiency as camp wears on.
"We bounced around pretty good early," said Briles, "and then we showed some fatigue towards the end. We got a little sloppy on the offensive side, but we have to keep them fresh and keep them going.
"What we're trying to do is be intelligent about the way we practice. We want the guys who should be on the field on the field August 30."
When asked about his team's progress after just two days, the affable Briles responded with one of his trademark quotes.
"I'd like to be further on than we are," added Briles. "I'd like to be crisper than what we are. I'd like to be sharper mentally than what we are. But, that is why Mr. Practice invented practice years ago."
The Cougars again hit the practice fields on Friday afternoon for a 4 pm workout in the August heat and humidity. Houston has its annual Media Day early on Saturday before returning to the practice field for another 4 pm workout that afternoon.
