HOUSTON, Texas - With the season opener versus Rice looming on the horizon, the University of Houston football team took to the field this morning determined to get better than the day before. In temperatures hovering in the 90s with high humidity, the Cougars sweated out a two-hour practice in preparation of their Administaff Bayou Bucket showdown with the Owls.
The Cougars spent the afternoon in meetings, saving their legs for their final day of two-a-days tomorrow.
Despite the sweltering morning conditions, UH head coach Art Briles is understandingly optimistic as the days count down.
"We got outside this morning, so we were able to dodge the rain this afternoon," commented Briles. "We had a really good workout (that was) a little more spirited than yesterday.
"I think we are starting to feel the effects of all the workouts to a small degree, but tomorrow we're going to go two times and pull it off a little in the morning and go again in the evening.
"They've maintained their eagerness. They've maintained their focus, so now we just have to finish up and be ready for next week."
As mentioned, the Cougars will take part in two practices tomorrow, heading outside at 10 am and returning indoors in the air-conditioned Yeoman Fieldhouse later in the afternoon. Houston will begin its regular game-week preparations on Sunday.
