HOUSTON, Texas - For the second straight day inclement weather played havoc on the Cougars' practice plans, sending the University of Houston football team inside the Yeoman Fieldhouse for its afternoon practice. Despite the change of plans, the Cougars enjoyed one of their most spirited workouts this fall, and because the team didn't back down in the face of adversity, UH head coach Art Briles was proud of his young squad.
"The offense and the defense had a good practice," said Briles. "We just need to get outside in the sun a little bit, and just haven't been able to. But, that's part of it.
"We'll get there when we can, and when we get there we'll do well."
The Cougars spent the two-hour practice working on a variety skills, ranging from passing drills to scout defense to some special teams. Since the team was forced inside, Briles and his staff had to scale back practice a bit.
"The (length of the) field holds us back a bit," added Briles. "We can't throw the ball downfield as much as we would like. It just condenses things, but it is better than sitting in classroom on a chalkboard. We'll get some good out of this and continue to learn from it."
Houston returns to its two-a-day format tomorrow, working out inside at 10 am and then hoping to get outside for its 4:30 pm practice. The Cougars have just four more days of practice before the game week with Rice officially begins on Monday, August 25, which also the first day of class for the students at UH.
