HOUSTON, Texas - Despite a torrential downpour that cut short the workout, the University of Houston Cougars continued their preseason camp this afternoon with a two-hour practice on the UH Practice Fields. With about 10 minutes left in practice the skies opened up, forcing UH head coach Art Briles to call a quick end to the workout.
Even though his Cougars had a sluggish practice in his estimation, Briles knows his team will rebound with a productive day tomorrow.
"I thought it was a decent practice," said Briles. "I don't think we had as much enthusiasm and excitement that we had yesterday. But, I guess that is expected this time of year. We just don't expect it. We expect every day to be better than the day before.
"I think the attitude was good, and the intensity was good. I would just like to see more pep in their step, (and) a little more joy to be out there."
The Cougars return to a day of two-a-days on Wednesday, taking part in workouts at 10 am and then again at 4:30 pm. Briles is looking to his seniors to make sure there is no letdown when it comes to practice.
"What we'll mention (to the team) is that we want more leadership," added Briles. "We don't have to pull the cord every day, so to speak. We need some other people to grab hold and take care of it for us.
"So, what we'll do is challenge our leaders on the team a little bit more and see if they'll pick it up and get us going."
Houston will have just one practice on Thursday and then one more Friday morning before lining up for the first and only scrimmage of the preseason camp on Friday afternoon. The Cougars kick off the Briles' Era on August 30, when UH plays host to its cross-town rival Rice in the annual Administaff Bayou Bucket.
