HOUSTON - University of Houston pitcher Brian Henderson was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI Second Team on Thursday.
A chemical engineering major, Henderson has accumulated a 3.58 grade point average in less than three seasons as a member of the Cougar Baseball Team.
This season, the Sugar Land, Texas, native has compiled a 4-2 record with 46 strikeouts and a 3.09 ERA in 46.2 innings of work. In addition, he brings a career-best four-game winning streak into Sunday's Conference USA finale at Memphis.
He has enjoyed a career season in 2003. After starting the year in the Cougar bullpen, Henderson forced his way into the UH weekend starting rotation and posted some impressive numbers. He set a new career-best with 6.2 innings pitched against Saint Louis during his first C-USA start on April 20 and capped that week by being named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week.
Henderson also tossed a career-best seven strikeouts at C-USA rival South Florida during the Cougars 12-7 win on April 27.
To be considered for selection to an all-academic team, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution. Awards are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
District VI schools include institutions from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, as well as Texas.
