Five Cougars Earn All-C-USA Softball Honors

HOUSTON - The University of Houston's Kristen Glowacz, Arelis Ferreris, Jamie Falco, Crystal Briscoe and Jaci Gonzalez earned 2003 All-Conference USA honors at the league softball awards banquet held Wednesday at the Great Hall in the Athletics/Alumni Center in Houston, Texas.
Glowacz (Katy, Texas-Mayde Creek HS) and Ferreris (Grand Prairie, TX-Bowie) were named to the C-USA First Team while Falco (Tomball, TX-Tomball) earned Second-Team honors and Gonzalez (San Antonio, TX-Sandra Day O'Connor) and Briscoe (Buffalo,TX-Buffalo) were named to the All-Freshman team.
No. 4 DePaul led the way with five first team all-conference selections, marking the third consecutive year that the Blue Demons have tied their own league record. Houston and South Florida followed with two, and East Carolina and Louisville each placed one player on the first team. The 2003 award winners and all-league teams were chosen by C-USA's nine head coaches.
Glowacz, a sophomore third baseman, leads the league in home runs (14) and slugging percentage (.713). She was named the 2002 C-USA Freshman of the Year and has earned Player of the Week honors three times this season.
Ferreris, a junior catcher and designated player, currently ranks second on the team with a .337 batting average. She was this week's C-USA Player of the Week and also named to the All-C-USA Second Team in 2002 and a First-Team and All-Freshman C-USA selection in 2001.
Pitcher Jamie Falco (13-9) leads the Cougar battery with a 1.32 ERA in 137.2 innings pitched in 2003. She was named the March 3 C-USA Pitcher of the Week and earns an All-Conference award for the first time in 2003.
Freshman shortstop Jaci Gonzalez earns her second All-C-USA award of the season after being named to the 2002 All-C-USA Volleyball Second Team as the Cougars' libero.
Cougar newcomer Crystal Briscoe (9-6) has complied a 4-3 record in league play and boasts a 1.75 ERA. C-USA batters hit a team-low .161 against her in regular season play.
The third-seeded Cougars (35-22, 15-9 C-USA) will host the 2003 C-USA Tournament Thursday through Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium in Houston. Houston will face No. 6 seed UAB Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
The championship game of the tournament on May 10 at 2 p.m. (CST) will be televised by affiliates of the Conference USA Television Network.
