HOUSTON - The University of Houston's Arelis Ferreris (Grand Prairie, Texas-Bowie HS) was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week for the period ending May 4. Ferreris, the Cougar catcher and a designated player, hit .600 in three games against No. 19 South Florida last week.
Ferreris had six of Houston's 13 hits in a three-game series against No. 19 Bulls Saturday and Sunday. She denied USF's Leigh Ann Ellis of a no-hitter in Saturday's game one and then went 4-for-4 in game two with three singles and one double for a 7-5 Cougar win.
She also nailed a two-run home run (ninth of the season) to set her weekend total of four RBI. She currently ranks second on the team with a .337 batting average.
Ferreris was also named to the All-C-USA Second Team in 2002 and was a First-Team and All-Freshman C-USA selection in 2001. This is the first time Ferreris has received the weekly honor.
Ferreris and the third-seeded Cougars (35-22, 15-9 C-USA) will host the 2003 C-USA Tournament Thursday through Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium in Houston. Houston will face No. 6 seed UAB Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
