HOUSTON - For the fifth straight season and the 16th time in school history, the University of Houston baseball team will compete in the NCAA postseason.
The Cougars earned an at-large bid from the NCAA Baseball selection committee Monday morning and will travel north to compete at the NCAA Regional at College Station. UH, which received the No. 3 seed at the Regional, will meet No. 2 seed Alabama at 2 p.m., Friday at Olsen Field in College Station, Texas.
Host Texas A&M, which received the No. 1 seed at the Regional, will meet No. 4 seed Oral Robert at 7 p.m., Friday at Olsen Field.
The Cougars (32-27) come into the NCAA Regional after being eliminated by East Carolina on Friday at the 2003 Conference USA Tournament at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.
Despite that loss, UH impressed the selection committee with a rigorous schedule, which was ranked 17th nationally, and by a high RPI, which remained in the Top 35 throughout the entire season.
The game can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with pre-game slated to begin about 15 minutes before first pitch. Fans also can view live stats at www.UHcougars.com by clicking on the "Gametracker" link on the Daily Calendar at the bottom of the main page.
The winner of the NCAA Regional at College Station will meet the winner of the NCAA Regional at Houston winner on June 6-8 with a berth to the NCAA College World Series on the line. That Regional, hosted by Rice, features Ole Miss, Wichita State and McNeese State.
