HOUSTON - - In only its third year as a Division I program, the University of Houston softball team emerged as a contender for the Conference USA championship and posted its second consecutive winning season. The Cougars, who finish the 2003 campaign with a 36-24 overall and 15-9 league record, will return all nine starters and 18 of 19 veterans next year.
Led by head coach Kyla Holas, the Cougars earned a No. 3 seed in the Houston-hosted 2003 C-USA Tournament, defeating UAB and losing to No. 19 South Florida and Southern Miss for a fifth place finish last week.
Houston set the single season league record for home runs in 2003, hitting 59 in 60 games this season. In addition to posting a program-best win record, the five Cougars earned All-C-USA honors in 2003.
The Cougars were led by 2003 First Team All-C-USA selections Kristen Glowacz (So.-Third base) and Arelis Ferreris (Jr.-Catcher). Glowacz finished the season with a league-best 14 homeruns and a .699 slugging percentage while Ferreris hit .337 and notched a team-best 49 RBI in 2003.
