HOUSTON - For the second straight weekend, the University of Houston baseball team will face one of Conference USA's best in a three game series.
The Cougars (14-15, 6-3, C-USA) play host to UAB in three games at Cougar Field. The Blazers come into the weekend at 21-7 overall and 6-2 in C-USA play, good enough to stand in second place - a half-game behind Southern Miss - in the latest league standings.
Last weekend, the Cougars traveled to Fort Worth and won two of three from TCU, who was tied with the Golden Eagles entering last weekend's series.
The series begins with 7 p.m. games on both Friday and Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The game can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with pre-game slated begin at 6:45 p.m. Fans also can view live stats at www.UHcougars.com by clicking on the "Gametracker" link on the Daily Calendar at the bottom of the main page.
Junior righthander Brad Sullivan will make his 10th start of the year against UAB on Friday. This season, the Nederland, Texas, native has compiled a 4-3 record, with wins in his last four starts, and leads the team with 79 strikeouts in 61.2 innings. After setting a UH single-season record with 157 strikeouts a year ago, Sullivan is poised to become the first pitcher in school history to record back-to-back 100+-strikeout seasons.
The Cougars come into the game on the heels of a disappointing 11-0 loss at No. 1 Rice on Tuesday. That game was UH's eighth straight away from the friendly confines of Cougar Field. However, the Cougars played successful on their season-long road swing, posting a 6-2 record during that time.
Junior Hyung Cho saw his UH season-best nine-game hitting streak come to an end on Tuesday, but the Toronto, Canada, native continues to lead the team in all Triple Crown categories with a .383 batting average, five home runs and 18 RBIs.
Freshman outfielder Travis Tully could return to the Cougar lineup after sitting out Tuesday's game with a strained hamstring. The Houston native brings a nine-game hitting streak into this weekend's series and has batted .393, which would give him the team lead if he qualified with enough at-bats.
UAB comes into the weekend on the heels of a 13-4 loss at Mississippi State on Tuesday. Kyle Leon leads the Blazer offense with a .427 batting average, eight home runs and 37 RBIs.
