HOUSTON - After winning three of four games last week, two members of the University of Houston baseball team were honored as the Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
For the first time in his career, junior infielder Cole Bruce was recognized as the league's Hitter of the Week, while junior righthander Brad Sullivan won his second straight honor as Pitcher of the Week.
Bruce led the Cougars with a .562 batting average, 1.125 slugging percentage and .556 on-base percentage at Southwest Texas State and at C-USA rival South Florida last weekend.
He extended his hitting streak to a career-best seven games and rapped out three hits in each of the Cougars' last two games at USF. In addition, he blasted two home runs in Tampa, Fla., including a monster shot well over the center field wall in the second game of the series.
With that performance, he raised his batting average to .307. It was the Cougars' first C-USA offensive honor this season.
Despite not receiving a decision last week, Sullivan collected the league's weekly pitching award with another stellar performance at South Florida in the series opener.
The Nederland, Texas, native struck out 12 while allowing only one hit on a close call in the sixth inning. In tossing the 11th double-digit strikeout game of his outstanding career, he struck out at least one batter in each of his eight innings and struck out two batters in a frame four times, including his final inning.
It was the third time that he was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week and his fourth weekly award in 2002. It also was his seventh career weekly accolade.
On April 21, he was named a "Louisville Slugger" National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball magazine after tying his own school record with 16 strikeouts against C-USA rival Saint Louis on April 18.
This season, Sullivan leads the Cougars with 116 strikeouts and a 1.91 ERA.
Both players return to action at 2 p.m., Tuesday against Texas-San Antonio at Cougar Field in the start of a busy week for the Cougars. From there, the team travels to Waco, Texas, for the second time this season to meet nationally-ranked Baylor at 6 p.m., Wednesday before returning home to host C-USA rival Louisville in a three-game series this weekend.
The series can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with pre-game slated to begin about 15 minutes before first pitch.
