HOUSTON - University of Houston pitchers Brian Henderson and Brad Sullivan each received Pitcher of the Week honors Monday after helping lead the Cougars to four straight wins.
Henderson received his first-ever Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award, while Sullivan was recognized as one of four "Louisville Slugger" National Players of the Week.
Henderson snared the league award after winning a pair of contests last week. In his first start of the season, the Sugar Land, Texas, native allowed only four hits with three strikeouts in five shutout innings to help lead the Cougars to a 5-1 win over No. 1 Rice in the finale of the 2003 Silver Glove Series.
He followed that performance with a win in his first-ever C-USA start against Saint Louis in the series finale Sunday. The junior southpaw allowed only four hits in a career-best 6.2 innings of work and gave up only one unearned run to extend his winning streak to a personal-best four consecutive games.
With the Billikens' lone run in the seventh inning, Henderson saw his consecutive inning scoreless streak snapped at 21.0 innings, the longest in-season streak by a Cougar hurler this season.
Sullivan tied a UH single-game record with 16 strikeouts against Saint Louis in the series opener Friday. The junior righthander struck out the side four times and struck out at least one batter in each of his eight innings of work.
With that total, he boosted his season strikeout total to 104 Ks - the sixth-highest in UH single-season history - and became the first pitcher in UH history to record back-to-back 100+-strikeout seasons.
It was the sixth weekly award and the fourth national honor for Sullivan during his outstanding career.
Sullivan, Henderson and the rest of the Cougars return to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as they meet Southwest Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. Two weeks ago, the Cougars took a 14-6 win over the Bobcats at Cougar Field.
