HOUSTON - Fresh of an undefeated week, the University of Houston baseball team looks to extend its winning streak to five straight games when it meets Southwest Texas State at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, in San Marcos, Texas.
The game can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with pre-game slated to begin about 15 minutes before first pitch.
This will be the second time in two weeks that these two teams have met. On April 8, UH took a 14-6 win over the Bobcats at Cougar Field. However, this will be only the third time and the first since 1995 that UH has competed in San Marcos.
The Cougars (22-18) come into the contest on the heels of a three-game sweep of Conference USA rival Saint Louis last weekend at Cougar Field. With those wins, UH jumped into a tie for third place with Tulane in the latest league standings.
With strong pitching all week, a pair of Cougar pitchers were recognized for their work on Monday. Junior southpaw Brian Henderson was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week after recording wins against No. 1 Rice and Saint Louis last week, while junior righthander Brad Sullivan was named a "Louisville Slugger" National Player of the Week after tying a UH single-game record with 16 strikeouts against Saint Louis on Friday.
Sophomore righthander Garrett Mock will make his 10th start of the season Tuesday against the Bobcats. This season, the Houston native has recorded a 2-3 record with a 3.97 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 47.2 innings of work.
This will be the first time that he has faced Southwest Texas State.
Junior third baseman Hyung Cho continues to be an offensive force for the Cougars, leading the team in all Triple Crown categories with nine home runs, 29 RBIs and a .372 batting average.
Junior center fielder Michael Bourn also made his impact felt in the four games last week, leading the Cougars with a .643 batting average, four stolen bases in as many attempts and a .706 on-base percentage. The Humble, Texas, native posted four straight multi-hit games and has scored at least one run in each of his last six games.
In 2003, Bourn has batted .282 with 14 runs, eight RBIs and a .386 on-base percentage.
Southwest Texas State (21-21) comes into the game after winning the final two games of a Southland Conference series at Texas-Arlington last weekend.
Junior outfielder Richard Martinez leads the Bobcats with a .322 batting average, while Jacob Spencer and Evan Tierce are tied for team-high honors with 27 RBIs apiece. Cory Covert tops all Bobcats with five home runs in 2003.
Head coach Ty Harrington had not announced his scheduled starter.
