It was a nation's best time of 39.70 seconds last weekend for the University of Houston men's 4x100-meter relay team at the Tom Tellez Invitational on March 29. The mark is the best time for a Cougar 4x100-meter relay team since Houston's 1996 relay team posted a season-best time of 39.28 seconds at the Houston Invitational. The 1996 tandem also was Houston's last 4x100-meter relay team to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The last time Houston finished among the top eight teams at the NCAA Championships was in 1989 when current UH head coach Leroy Burrell served as the anchor leg. That team finished third with a time of 38.93 seconds.
The women's track and field team has both its relays ranked among the nation's top seven. The women's 4x100-meter relay is ranked fifth this week after recording a time of 44.66 seconds at the Tom Tellez Invitational on March 29. The Lady Cougars are seventh among national 4x400-meter relays with a time of 3:39.29 at the TSU Relays on March 22.
Sophomore Alicia Cave has the nation's fifth-best time in the 400-meter hurdles with 59.42 seconds in the preliminaries of the Texas Southern Relays on March 21. She and Lauren Smith are ranked among national leaders in the 100-meter hurdles. Smith is eighth with a time of 13.54 seconds at the Tellez Invitational. Alicia Cave is 14th with a time of 13.79 seconds.
