Houston Wins Four Events At LSU Alumni Gold Invitational

One of eight schools competing at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational, the University of Houston men's and women's track and field teams recorded individual championships, five second-place finishes and nine third-place finishes.
In the men's division, the Cougars had two individual victories, two second-place finishes and three third-place finishes. Cole Dailey won the 5,000 meter run with a career-best time of 15:14.19, and Derek Randall won the discus with a throw of 56.78 meters (156'3").
Andrew Carruthers was a silver medallist in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.32 seconds and had a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.83 seconds. Jason Edwards also qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional in the long jump when he finished in third place with a leap of 7.46 meters (24'5.75").
In addition, Houston's "B" team of Preston Perry, Dameon Williams, Brandon Womack and Jason Hodge were the runner-ups in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.07 seconds.
In the women's events, Houston registered two individual victories, three second-place finishes and six third-place finishes. Eight Lady Cougars also qualified to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional at Lincoln, Neb..
Kelly McCarty won the 1500 meters at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational with a time of 4:35.09. Her time is the fastest time recorded by a Conference USA runner this season.
Alicia Cave was the 400-meter hurdles champion with a time of 59.88 seconds. Cave also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.86 seconds and ran the second leg of Houston's 4x100-meter relay team that finished in second place with a time of 46.42 seconds. The other three members on the relay team were Ashley George, Magenta Taylor and Lauren Smith.
Monica De La Haya also finished in third place in the 400-meter hurdles. Two-time Conference USA champion Courtnie Ratliff recorded a third-place finish in the 400 meter dash and qualified for the NCAA Regional with a time of 53.11 seconds.
C-USA indoor 200 and 400-meter champion Ebony Floyd qualified to compete in the 200 and 400 meters at the NCAA Regional. She finished just behind Ratliff in the 400 meters with a time of 53.77 seconds and was fifth in 200 meters with a time of 23.72 seconds.
Jessica Oakes finished in third place in the 5,000 meters with a season-best time of 17:57.39.
In the field events, Jessica Edwards had a second-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.35 meters (10'11.75") and Allie Booker was the runner-up in the women's discus with a throw of 46.70 meters (153'2"). Booker's discus throw is a NCAA Regional qualifying mark. She also finished in eighth place in the hammer with a throw of 37.80 meters (124') and Shayla Bowman was fourth with a hammer throw of 48.02 meters (157'6").
Tinisha Wesley qualified for the NCAA Regional and finished third in the shot put with a mark of 14.06 meters (46'1.50"). She also had a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 45.02 meters (147'8:").
Nichole Brundage also had a third-place finish in the high jump with a season-best leap of 1.66 meters (5'5.25").
Both teams return home this weekend as the hosts for the Houston Invitational on April 18-19 at the Carl Lewis/Tom Tellez Track and Field Complex behind UH's Athletics/Alumni Center. The meet will kick off on Friday at 4:00 p.m. with the men's and women's pole vault and javelin throw in the field events. The only running events scheduled for Friday evening are the men's and women's 5,000 meter run.
On Saturday, the field events are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and the running events start at 1:00 p.m.
