For the first time in school history the University of Houston softball team pulled off a series sweep in Conference USA, taking game three today against Southern Miss at the Golden Eagle Softball Complex, 5-1. Yesterday, the Cougars swept a double-header from the Golden Eagles.
With the win the Cougars improve to 13-10 overall and 3-0 in league action.
For four innings it looked as though Houston would fall short in its attempt at a sweep. Southern Miss took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of UH pitcher Crystal Briscoe (4-3). With one out Briscoe hit Auriel Jenkins, who moved to second on a groundout by Tammy Edwards. Sarah Boyd laced a 1-1 pitch into center field for a run-scoring single.
The Cougars threatened in the first, second and fourth innings but came away empty, while stranding five baserunners. In the fifth the UH bats exploded, scoring five runs to ensure the series sweep. Lindsay Durham left off the frame with a single to right field, and the Jaci Gonzalez walked after being down 0-2 in the count. Kim Nesloney sacrificed both runners up a base, and Jeanie Davis walked to load the bases. Finally, a Cougar came up with a clutch hit in this contest, as Kristen Glowacz singled up the middle to tie the score.
But, the scoring was not finished. Arelis Ferreris followed with a run-producing single to left field, and Jenilee Skender greeted USM reliever Danielle Hatfield with a first-pitch single up the middle to score two more Cougars. Candis Turbo completed the fifth-inning onslaught with a fourth straight single to score Ferreris.
Jenny Johnson relieved Briscoe and shut down the Golden Eagles on just two hits over her three innings, earning her first save of the season.
Glowacz was the big hitter for the Cougars on the afternoon, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Skender led the Cougars with her two RBI.
The Cougars return home on Saturday, March 8, to face Louisiana Tech in a doubleheader at 1 pm at the Cougar Softball Complex.
