HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team swept Alabama A&M 12-0 and 9-1 in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. With the wins the Cougars improve to 24-13 overall and remain 6-0 in Conference USA.
Freshman pitcher Crystal Briscoe (6-3) struck out eight and allowed only two hits in four innings of work to pick up sixth career win. Left-handed frosh Brooke Johnson relieved Briscoe and faced four batters in the top of the fifth inning to close out the game early with a 12-0 win.
Alabama A&M's Tawana Carroll led off with a single to center field in the first inning and Ashley Myers added one in the fourth for the Lady Bulldogs' only hits in game one.
Freshman shortstop Jaci Gonzalez led the Cougar offense, going 2-2 on a lead-off single and bunt. Jeanie Davis added four RBI with a grand slam homerun in the bottom of the second inning. Davis leads Conference USA with seven homeruns this season.
Seven other Cougars added a hit in the four-inning contest. As a team, Houston racked up 10 hits and 10 RBI in the win.
Game two saw a similar start as Houston jumped to a 1-0 lead as Jenny Baker and Jenilee Skender singled in the bottom of the first. The Cougars put five runs on the board in the next inning with singles from Candis Turnbo, Michelle Whipple, Jenny Baker, Jenilee Skender, Amber King. Arelis Ferreris added a sacrifice fly and Kristin Glowacz knocked out a double to put the game out of reach for the 11-24 Lady Bulldogs.
Freshman hurler Brooke Johnson was spectacular in her first career start in game two. She pitcher a no-hitter against A&M and struck out eight in five innings of work. It was the first no-hitter of the season for the Cougars.
Leading 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars put the eight-run "mercy rule" into effect when they scrambled together three runs to win their 24th game of the year, 9-1.
The Cougars will continue their five-game home stand Saturday as they face No. 9 DePaul (18-4, 5-1 C-USA) in a C-USA doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
