Houston, Texas - With the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cougars saw their rally fall short against Texas Tech, losing 6-5 in the final day of the UH Invitational at the Cougar Softball Complex. Houston is now 5-8 on the year.
Houston had fallen behind 6-2 heading into the bottomC of the fifth, but the Cougar bats came alive to mount a three-run rally. Lindsay Durham led off the frame with a single down the leftfield line, and that was followed with a walk to Jaci Gonzalez. Kim Nesloney's force out moved the runners up a base, before Arelis Ferreris singled to third to score Durham. Kristen Glowacz followed with a single up the middle to cut the Tech lead to 6-4.
After Tech switched pitchers Jenilee Skender greeted the reliever with a sharp single to leftfield, scoring Ferreris but Glowacz was out at the plate.
In their final threat in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars started another rally when Jeanie Davis laced a pinch-hit double just inside the foul pole down the leftfield line. Nesloney grounded out and Ferreris flied out to right field, bringing Glowacz to the plate. After walking and then stealing second, Glowacz represented the winning run with Skender at bat. After working the count to two-two and fouling off several pitches, Skender struck out to end the game.
Tech had jumped on UH starting pitcher Crystal Briscoe for single runs in the first and second and then a three-spot in the third; however, Briscoe settled down and limited the Red Raiders to just one run and one hit the rest of the way. Briscoe pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and just three earned runs to fall to 2-2 on the year.
The Cougars scored their single runs in the second and third on a Skender home run and an RBI single by Ferreris. Both Ferreris and Skender were 2-4 on the day with two RBI apiece.
