Houston, Texas - Junior guard Andre Owens was named the Conference USA Co-Player-of-the-Week after he led Houston to two overtime victories over Chicago State and Texas A&M.
Owens began the week recording 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists in 42 minutes to lead Houston to a 71-65 overtime win over Chicago State on December 23. Then, he scored 41 points and grabbed three steals to lead the Cougars to a 70-61 victory over intrastate rival Texas A&M.
His 41 points against Texas A&M made him the first Cougar to score 40 points in a game since Greg Anderson scored 41 points against Arizona State on December 6, 1986. He also became the first player to score 40 points against the Aggies since former Cougar All-American Otis Birdsong scored 43 points against Texas A&M in 1977.
Owens leads the Cougars back into action tomorrow night when Houston plays host to LSU at 7:30 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion.
