HOUSTON - The University of Houston football continued its final week of practice in Houston Tuesday with a solid two-hour workout at the UH practice fields.
Heading out on Friday morning, the Cougars meet Western Athletic Conference member Hawai'i at 7 p.m., (CST) Dec. 25, during the 2003 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
Fans can hear the game on KBME AM 790 beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. (CST). Craig Ackerman handles play-by-play duties while former All-Southwest Conference center Chuck Brown will provide the color analysis.
The game also will be televised on ESPN to a national audience with Dave Barnett, Bill Curry and Heather Cox calling the action. That fact was certainly not lost on first-year head coach Art Briles and his Cougar team.
"It's certainly a great opportunity for us to showcase not only our team but our university to the nation," Briles said. "We're going to be in every household in America and it's a great chance to get back and show people what we're all about."
With beautiful scenery and the first postseason appearance since 1996, the bowl game offers many distractions. However, Briles and his Cougar team aren't making the trip just for fun.
"Our objective is go over there and take care of business and win the football game," Briles said.
While the Cougars are traveling more than 3,000 miles for the game, the Warriors won't even need to leave their home stadium. That's a cause for some concern for Briles, but he believes the festivities surrounding the bowl game will take Hawaii out of its regular schedule.
"They are the home team, but it's not a regular home game for them," Briles said. "They go through all of the bowl activities just like we do. It's a deal where they are not going to be quite as comfortable as they would be if it were a regular home game."
