Led by an all-around team performance and the quickest match of the season, the University of Houston women's volleyball team posted their first three-game sweep of the year over the visiting East Carolina Pirates (10-20, 1-11 C-USA) while improving to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in Conference USA on Friday (Nov. 14) night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston took a big lead in the first two games of the match in cruising to 30-22 and 30-17 scores, and despite battling the Pirates and going back-and-forth early in the third game, pulled ahead to 20-10 and never looked back en route to a 30-23 game win.
Four Cougars reached double figures in kills, led by freshman Kelly McAnelly with 15, followed by Cinthia Piva and Becca Sartori with 13 apiece, respectively, and Loure Dews with 10. Piva added 10 digs for a double-double, and Mirela Vasconcellos registered 11 digs and a team-high 27 assists to join Piva as the other Cougar with a double-double.
In addition, Sartori led Houston with a .450 hitting percentage for the match as the Cougars posted a .311 hitting percentage as a team.
The Cougars host the Charlotte 49ers in the home finale of the 2003 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Hofheinz Pavilion at 7:30p.m.
