HOUSTON - University of Houston baseball head coach Rayner Noble announced the signing of eight student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday during the early signing period.
The all-freshmen group consists of four pitchers -- with that corps split evenly with two righthanders and two southpaws - three infielders and one outfielder. In addition, all of the signees hail from Texas with most coming out of the greater Houston area.
"We feel like this is an outstanding recruiting class," Noble said. "I like the fact that the class is all freshmen, so they will be with us for three years."
The pitching group consists of righthanders Ricky Hargrove (Katy High) and Chris Wright (Langham Creek High) and southpaws Nick Cobler (Strake Jesuit High) and Donald deRegnier (Bellaire High).
In the infield, Jared Dyer (Deer Creek High), Brian Pounds (North Shore High) and Steven Whalen (Clements High) will join the Cougars for the 2004-05 season. Chris Joseph (Westside High) was the lone outfielder to sign on Wednesday.
Noble said additional signings could be announced over the next few days.
The Cougars open their 2004 season on Feb. 13-15 when they compete at the Minute Maid Park College Classic in Houston.
