HOUSTON - With its second bye weekend of the year looming, the University of Houston football team held a light workout Tuesday afternoon at the UH practice fields.
The Cougars (5-3, 2-2 C-USA) don't return to action until 4 p.m., Nov. 8, when they play host to Conference USA rival Southern Miss in the annual Homecoming contest at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars will hold light workouts Wednesday and Thursday with a session in the weight room Friday. After taking Saturday off, the Cougars begin installing the game plan against Southern Miss on Sunday.
With a lengthy break ahead, first-year head coach Art Briles paced his squad through a 90-minute practice Tuesday in shorts and shoulder pads. With so much time before the team's next break, Briles said there was no need yet to intensify the team's workouts.
"We're focusing on intelligence, effort and strength. We're not going to try and gear it up," Briles said. "We have a chance to refine a few things, and we will start recharging on Sunday."
UH comes into its bye weekend on the heels of a 62-55 loss to 15th-ranked TCU last weekend at Robertson Stadium. In that game, quarterback Kevin Kolb became only the fourth player in NCAA Division I-A history to throw for more than 400 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same contest.
For that impressive feat, he was honored as the Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the second time this season that he received the league's weekly accolade.
