Theresa Fuqua Chat Wrap
|
Mark (Houston): How is your women's freshman class coming along.
Coach Fuqua: We have two freshmen running for our women's cross country team this year who are our number four and five runners. Their success at the Conference USA meet will dictate how we finish as a team. We also have Jennifer Hunt, who is one of the top half-milers in the nation, but isn't running for our cross country team. She will be a very important runner for our track team.
Jason: What kind of training does your mens team do? i.e. how many miles per week? Is that number lowered during track season? thanks and good luck!
Coach Fuqua: Our training schedule varies from runner to runner. We have some runners who train at 50 miles per week and some who train at 85-90 miles per week. Their mileage will fluxuate depending on which events they are running during the track season. Otherwise, our training is textbook strength work.
danny(houston): how does your recruiting class look for next years xc season(mens side)?
Coach Fuqua: Since we only have one senior on the team this year, I hope to bring in two middle distance and two long distance runners.
John (Houston): Who are the top teams heading into this weekend's Conference USA Championships? How do you think the UH teams will fare?
Coach Fuqua: On the women's side, Marquette is ranked 15th or so in the nation. TCU is also pretty tough and have a good group of young runners. South Florida also has either won or finished second in the last six years. In the men's division, it is a little tough to tell. Cincinnati, Marquette and UH look good. It's going to be a very close race.
Karen (Houston): What kind of training program do you have for the women's team? Does it change as the season goes along?
Coach Fuqua: We have the same training program for both of our men's and women's program. The women's team may do slightly less mileage. Their range would be 40-70 miles per week. Again, their distance as the season progresses will depend on the events they run during the track season.
